The Kinetic Classroom

Has your supervisor asked you to get your students moving while they learn? Have you noticed that children who participate actively in a lesson learn easier? There’s a reason for this phenomenon: When children move, they increase the rate that oxygen circulates throughout their bodies, including their brains.

According to Diane Starke, author of a Professional Development Module on Active Learning, Learning is not a spectator sport. Students do not learn much just by sitting in class listening to teachers, memorizing prepackaged assignments, and spitting out answers.” By shifting from teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning, the classroom becomes a vehicle for self discovery and a life-long zest for learning.

Each activity in this book includes a time stamp to show you whether you need to plan a few extra minutes to prepare for the activity. You get the materials needed and in some cases, a sample finished product. However, since each classroom is different, each way of approaching the activities will be different.

These activities can be used for any grade level and any subject. Enjoy this sample. I hope you will order the book to see the backup research, ways to bring your students back to normalcy from the activity, and all the other wonderful ways I got my own students moving around the classroom to energize their brains!

Included in this book:

1. Research documenting the value of active learning.
2. The 5 Rs of active learning.
3. Easy ways to regain control after an active learning session.
4. Overcoming obstacles to success.
5. Over 60 inside and outside learning activities.
